TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 17 Arizona volleyball team (1-0) swept Winthrop (2-2) in its first match of the season this morning in the Four Points University Plaza Wildcat Classic. Game scores were 30-20, 30-22, 30-21.
"This was a good opening match for us," Head Coach David Rubio said. "It was nice to see that what we're working on in practice is working in a game situation. I liked our blocking and our defense was better."
The Wildcats hit .322 on the match, compared to the .088 of the Eagles. Arizona also out-blocked Winthrop 9-2.
Senior Kim Glass led Arizona with 14 kills and 11 digs. Fellow senior Jennifer Abernathy added 11 kills. Sophomore Dominique Lamb tallied a match-high five blocks, while setter Stephanie Butkus dished out 21 assists.
In the first game, Arizona out-hit Winthrop .316 to .069. The Eagles also committed eight service errors. Glass paced the Wildcats with five kills and three digs.
Arizona hit .379 in game two, while Winthrop combined for a .158 hitting percentage. Abernathy led Arizona with four kills.
In the third and final game, Arizona .286, but held Winthrop to .000.
The Wildcats host No. 20 Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. tonight in McKale.
