BERKELEY, Calif. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team earned its first tie of the season against No. 12 California, 1-1. Each team scored once in the first half but both were shut out for the remainder of the game.

California is a very good team and they had more run of play in the first half,” explained Head Coach Dan Tobias. “In the second half, we played much better. We played tighter defensively and had a lot more control of the ball. In the first overtime we did a very good job of controlling possession but we just couldn’t find the back of the net. In the second overtime, Cal played very well and they had a lot of control and possession. We did a good job staying tight defensively, though.”

In the first half, the Bears got out to an early lead with a goal at the 11:23 mark. Julia Schnugg scored for California off a long header that was assisted on by Brianna Bak. Arizona was able to even the score going into the half with an own goal at the 41:43 mark off a corner kick by Kaity Heath. The goal came after a shot by London King deflected off a Cal defender.

Neither team was able to take control of the game in a defensively charged second half. Both teams recorded three shots. In overtime, neither team had many opportunities with Arizona getting off two shots and California notching three.

Chelsea McInytre was in goal for the Wildcats; she recorded five saves while allowing one goal. King led the Arizona offense with four shots, two on goal.

“Walking out on the road against the 12th-ranked team with a draw is not the worst thing,” said Tobias. “We showed some fight and character in coming back after getting down and that is a good sign since this is such a young group.”

Arizona, which moved to 8-5-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in the Pac-10, will be in action again on Sunday, Oct. 15 when it heads to Stanford for a 2:30 p.m. game.
