OKLAHOMA CITY, OK --- Batting .692 in Arizona’s 5-0 weekend, Wildcat Kristie Fox (San Diego, CA) has been selected as the USA Softball National Player of the Week for the week of February 1-7. Going 9-for-13, the sophomore shortstop tallied a double, two home runs, nine RBI and three stolen bases over the weekend.
“She was by far our most consistent performer this weekend,” said head coach Mike Candrea. “She was very clutch as we faced some tougher pitching than we have in past years during our first weekend. She is a phenomenal hitter and I am very proud of the way she played this weekend.”
“I am very excited and honored to receive this award,” said Fox. “We have worked so hard in practice this year and it really carried over into the games this weekend. I felt comfortable on the field with familiar faces and hopefully we can continue this type of play as the season goes along.”
The Wildcats captured first place at the Pepsi Arizona Classic in Tucson, AZ with a 5-0 record over the weekend. On Friday, Fox was walked twice in the 3-0 victory against Tulsa in the opening game and later unleashed a 3-for-3 outing in a 4-3 win over Kansas. Adding two more victories, on Saturday she went 3-for-5 with four RBI, two home runs and a stolen base in Arizona’s wins against Northwestern and Oklahoma State.
Ending on a high note, Fox had three hits, three runs and three RBI in Sunday’s 9-0 rout over New Mexico State. She totaled a weekend slugging percentage of 1.231 with 16 total bases.
