Walnut Creek, Calif. ?- Arizona senior Katie Johnson has been named Pacific-10 Conference Gymnast of the Week for March 7-13, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Johnson, a native of Moorhead, Minn., led Arizona to its highest team total of the season (196.375) last Friday in victories over Cal-State Fullerton (193.600), Texas Women’s University (192.700) and Ball State (191.300).
Appearing in her final meet at McKale Center in front of the home crowd, Johnson tied her career-high on the vault with a score of 9.900, while capturing the individual title. She then placed second on the balance beam, scoring a 9.850. Johnson capped off her night with a 9.925 performance in the floor exercise that earned her the individual title and helped set Arizona’s season-high of 49.400 in the event.
This marks the second time in her career that Johnson has been named Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week. She also earned the honor in the 2002 for her performance against UCLA on January 26. Classmate Monica Bisordi was chosen as Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week last month for her all-around performance against Oregon State. On the season, Johnson has won six vault titles and five floor titles.
The Wildcats will travel to College Park, Md., for their final regular season meet, where they will face Maryland, Rhode Island and James Madison starting at 5 p.m. (MST) this Friday, March 18.
