TUCSON, Ariz. -

No. 74 Arizona (9-11, 1-5) fell to No. 2 USC (19-2, 8-0), 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Robson Tennis Center.

"The team did a good job competing today," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "We certainly created a lot of chances. We were close on all courts but, unfortunately, failed to capitalize on the big points."

UA freshman Shayne Austin (Oak Park, Calif.) recorded Arizona's sole point by capturing a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Ellie Yates at the No. 5 singles spot. The win was Austin's eighth in singles play for the season.

At the No. 1 singles spot, No. 64 UA junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.)  dropped her first set, 6-3, to No. 2 Sabrina Santamaria. In the second set, Smyth took Santamaria to a tiebreaker but fell 7-3, handing USC the match victory.

At the No. 2 singles spot, UA junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) positioned Arizona to record its second point of the match when she won her second set, 6-3, after dropping the first set, 6-2. The match was called off due to USC already clinching the match.

In the first set of her singles match, Arizona junior Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) kept the score close against No. 116 Guiliana Olmos at the No. 4 spot but fell 7-5. Olmos went on to take the second set to extend USC's lead.

Stubbe and James also paired up in doubles at the No. 2 spot and kept a 6-5 lead over No. 30 Scandalis and DeSimone when the match was retired as a result of USC winning the doubles point.

"Our girls are starting to realize more and more that we can compete with anyone," Maes said. "We just need to take these lessons to heart and play better next time around."

Next: The Wildcats will continue to play at home next weekend, as Arizona hosts No. 12 Stanford on Friday, April 12 at 1:30 p.m. MST and No. 11 California on Saturday at noon.
