TUCSON--University of Arizona football coach Mike Stoops and staff have signed 15 players to National Letters of Intent for the 2007 season, filling what he calls some immediate needs.

“We filled our pressing needs at several positions, notably the line and linebackers on defense. Plus offensively with our move to the spread, we wanted more speed at receiver. We did that,” Stoops said.

“And with an early departure at running back (Chris Henry, to enter the NFL draft as a junior), we wanted to bring in some backs. I felt we hit our immediate needs. We have a solid team coming back, with 19 starters returning, so we’ll see who among the new guys might be able to contribute,” Stoops said.

“In today’s recruiting, you have to evaluate hard and get kids that want to be here. These guys were on our list from the start and we paid a lot of attention to character and work ethic. The ratings by recruiting services and bystanders are irrelevant,” Stoops said.

The Cats signed players to nine different positions -- four defensive linemen, a pair of linebackers, three wide receivers, two running backs, a tight end, a quarterback, a cornerback and a placekicker.

The group joins one scholarship player, defensive back Marquis Hundley, who enrolled at mid-year for the spring semester. Arizona also has several scholarships remaining and could sign additional players before the start of fall camp in August.
