The University of Arizona women's softball team beat North Carolina, but later lost to Texas in play at the Kia Klassic Saturday in Fullerton, Calif.

Toni Mascarenas and Leneah Manuma each hit home runs in the 6-1 win over the Tar Heels. Becky Lemke (11-1) pitched seven innings, scattering three hits and one run, while striking out 11 for the win.

After Lauren Bauer and Nicole Giordano reached base on an error and single, respectively, in the first inning of the North Carolina game, Manuma hit a one-out home run to centerfield, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. Bauer scored again the next inning. She stole home on the front-end of a double-steal with Mascarenas.

Mascarenas led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to leftfield. The Wildcats scored again in the bottom of the sixth as Manuma drove in Giordano with a single up the middle. Manuma finished the game.3-for-4 with four RBIs.

Texas avenged a 14-0 Feb. 13 loss to the Wildcats as pitcher Charla Moore (8-7) held the Wildcats to one run off seven hits, lifting the Longhorns to a 2-1 win. In the first meeting between the teams this season, Moore gave up nine runs in 2-2/3 innings, but she came out victorious today.

The Longhorns scored first in the bottom of the six, as Lindsay Gardner scored on a throwing error by Giordano.

Arizona tied the game in the top of the seventh as pitcher Jenny Gladding homered to right-centerfield to lead off the inning. The Wildcats had runners on first and second with two outs, but Lindsay Collins struck out looking to end the inning.

Fate turned the other way in the bottom of the seventh as Gladding (9-2) gave up a solo home run to lead off the inning to Texas designated player Deeanna Williams, ending the game.

Arizona concludes play in the tournament Sunday.
