TUCSON, Ariz. -

Arizona senior diver Ben Grado (Conifer, Colo.) qualified for the 1-meter diving finals at the ATT USA Diving Championships on Friday after finishing in third place. He finished the event in fourth place after finishing in third in 2009.

“Ben did an exceptional job of being consistent and solid on the boards today,” Arizona head diving coach Michele Mitchell said. “I was going to pull him from the event because his shoulder was sore, but he decided to compete and compete he did.  I’m extremely happy with his performances here and look forward to challenging him to great places on the 3-meter and 10-meter.”

Arizona sophomore Sam Pickens (Murrysville, Pa.) finished 16th on the 3-meter in a very close competition.

“This was one of Sam’s best finishes on the 3-meter,” Mitchell said. “With the exception of missing one dive, she did a super job and was right there to make it to the finals. She was very disappointed, but handled her defeat with grace. She is an incredibly hard worker and I have no doubt that she will be there in December at the Winter Nationals.”

Pickens is done competing in the Championships, but Grado will compete on the 3-meter in the finals on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. PST.
