The Arizona Wildcat men’s tennis team dropped their fifth consecutive match with a 6-1 loss to the Stanford Cardinal. The teams faced off at Stanford’s Taube Tennis Center where Fredrik Ask earned Arizona’s sole point of the day with a win on court two.
In doubles play, the Cats fell on courts two and three and called the match on court one. First to finish was the team of Matt Dunn and Mario Urquidi on court three. The Arizona duo fell, 8-4, to the Stanford team of Jamin Ball and Daniel Ho. On court two, Naoki Takeda and Kieren Thompson wrapped up next in their match against Maciek Romanowicz and Robert Stineman. The Wildcat team secured five wins but their efforts would fall short ass the dropped the match, 8-5.
In singles action, Sumeet Shinde was first to finish in his match against Romanowicz on court three. The two fought a close match but Shinde, a sophomore from Pune, India, was ultimately edged, 6-4, 6-3. On court four, Urquidi finished next in his match against Stineman. The junior from El Paso, Texas dropped the match, 6-3, 6-2. Third to finish was Takeda on court five. The freshman from Osoka, Japan dropped a hard fought battle, 6-3, 6-4, to Ho. The match marked the fourth point for the Cardinal and clinched the match in their favor.
On court one, Thompson faced off against No. 39-ranked John Morrissey. The two fought a close first set but Thompson, a junior from Brisbane, Australia, fell, 6-4. In the second set, Thompson was able to secure only one win as he dropped the set and the match, 6-1.
Earning Arizona’s only point of the day was Ask on court two. The junior from Oslo, Norway, clinched the first set, 6-2, over Nolan Paige but dropped the second 6-3. The court entered a third set where Ask came out on top, clinching the match, 7-5.
Last to finish was Carlos Bermudez on court six. The sophomore from Tucson fought a close battle with Trey Strobel, clinching the first set, 7-6(2), but dropping the second, 6-2. The court entered a third set where Bermudez was edged, 6-3.
With the loss Arizona falls to 0-5 in Pac-12 play while Stanford improves to 2-3.
The Cats will be back in action on Saturday as they head to Berkeley, Calif. to take on the No. 16 California Golden Bears. The teams are set to face off at 1:00 p.m.
