TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona freshman guard Davellyn Whyte was named to the Full Court Press Freshman All-America Second Team in a vote conducted by the website’s national staff and correspondents.
Whyte, who was named the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, joined a group of players that included the Freshman of the Year from the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC and Big East conferences. She was the highest-honored player among all Pac-10 freshmen after leading the Wildcats in scoring with 15.7 points per game.
The native of Phoenix and 2009 Gatorade Player of the Year in Arizona was also a 1st-team all-Pac-10 selection in her first collegiate campaign, the only freshman named to the all-conference list. Whyte marked her debut season by setting the program’s single-game scoring record with 39 points in a record-shattering 119-112 win over Oregon on January 16 at McKale Center.
She began her Wildcat career with a 27-point, 9-rebound performance against Iona (N.Y.), the most points scored by a freshman in their first-ever game since Shawntinice Polk tallied 29 points in her first game against LSU in November of 2002.
Whyte capped a 2-0 weeked at the season-opening Iona College Tip-Off Tournament by being named the Most Valuable Player of the event after averaging 19.0 points and 5.5 rebounds while hitting 14-of-27 from the field and 7-of-16 three-point attempts. She scored 20 or more points in nine games for the Wildcats and tallied in double figures in 25-of-31 games.
