Women?s Tennis Stays Undefeated, 9-0

Fresno, Calif. ?- The No. 46 women’s tennis team took on No. 62 Oklahoma (2-2) and defeated them, 5-1, extending their winning streak to 9-0. Due to weather conditions they did not play the doubles matches The Wildcats won five of the six single matches. This is the Wildcats best streak for consecutive wins in the history of Arizona’s women’s tennis program.

 

“We are happy to be 9-0”, said head coach Vicky Maes. “It shows how hard these girls are working and that they deserve to win. Fresno State was a step up for us, we knew they would be a tough team to beat, but I am very proud to see us win both matches.”

 

In singles play first position, senior Stephanie Balzert defeated Gabby Baker, 6-1, 6-3. In the No. 2 slot, undefeated freshman Danielle Steinberg overcame Oklahoma’s Irina Lykina, 6-2, 6-2. In the third position, sophomore Juliette Mavroleon lost by default to Oklahoma’s Monica Purice, 5-7, 1-0, def.

 

In the No. 4 slot, junior Kasia Jakowlew defeated Christi Baxley, 6-1, 7-5. On the next court, freshman Tina Razloznik clinched the match after overcoming Chelsea Orr, 7-6, 6-0. Sophomore Camelia Todorova defeated Brittany Baldy, 6-1, 6-2, in the sixth position.

 

Next weekend, Arizona will return home to play their first conference matches against No. 17 UCLA and Southern California Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25. The following week, the Wildcats will go back on the road to face California and Stanford March 3-4.
