Wildcats one of an elite 16-team field
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team will compete in the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championship, Oct. 29-31, in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Callaway Match Play Championships spotlight the best team in college golf in a double-elimination match play tournament format. Invitation to the event is based on finish at the 2006 NCAA Championships, where all 16 teams finished in the top 20 places. Hosted by the Golf Coaches Association of America, the event is scheduled for Oct. 29-31 at Colonial Country Club, a par-70, 7,054-yard layout.
First round match-ups and seedings are as follows:
(1) Florida vs. (16) Arizona
(2) Georgia vs. (15) Minnesota
(3) UCLA vs. (14) Auburn
(4) Oklahoma State vs. (13) North Carolina State
(5) Clemson vs. (12) Washington
(6) Coastal Carolina vs. (11) Lamar
(7) Texas A&M vs. (10) Arizona State
(8) UNLV vs. (9) Duke
The following players are scheduled to compete for Arizona: Creighton Honeck, Trey Denton, Josh Esler, Nathan Tyler, Ben Fox and Travis Esway. In previous Collegiate Match Play appearances, these UA players have amassed the following career records (number of appearances): Esway, 4-2 (2); Tyler, 3-3 (2); Esler 1-5-4 (3); Denton, 1-2 (1).
The UA junior varsity will also be in action, Oct. 30-31, at the Herb Wimberly Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. Tyler Neal, Nicholas Park, Ben Marsh, Josh Wilks and Josh Porter are scheduled to participate in the event hosted by New Mexico State University.
