????????????TUCSON, Ariz. ?C?Preston Guilmet reverted back to his 2007 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year form with 11 strikeouts against zero walks and Dillon Baird hit a fifth-inning grand slam, as top-ranked Arizona (3-1) defeated Sacramento State, 9-3, at Kindall Field on Friday. The win was UAˇ?s third straight since dropping its season-opener last Friday and handed UA skipper Andy Lopez his 900th career coaching victory.

?

????????????The Wildcats, who had jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with single runs in each of the first three innings, allowed the to Hornets to sneak back in to the contest with single runs in the fourth and fifth to make in a one-run ball game.

?

????????????The seemingly tenuous one-run edge didnˇ?t last long, as Sac State starter Nick Buchta placed himself in a jam after recording the first out in the bottom of the fifth by hitting Dwight Childs and walking Diallo Fon to place runners on first and second.

?

Jon Gaston followed with a bouncing fielderˇ?s choice grounder towards short that saw Fon beat the attempted force out at second to load the bases. Buchta retired UA DH C.J. Ziegler on a foul out to the catcher, but quickly found himself behind to clean-up hitter Baird.

?

Up 3-1 in the count, the first-year Wildcat crushed UAˇ?s eighth homer of the season over the billboard in right and on to Sixth Street for a bases-clearing blast. The homer was Bairdˇ?s second of the year and contributed to a 3-for-4, six-RBI night for the Yavapai Junior College transfer.

?

Guilmet (1-0), who was roughed up for eight runs on eight runs on seven hits in just four innings in the season opener last weekend, cruised to his first win of the year after allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits in seven innings of work.

?

The right-hander punched out seven in the first four innings and retired the side on strikes in the sixth. The walk-free night was just the tonic for the Wildcat ace who had issued three free passes to Georgia last Friday after posting a 4-to-1 strikeout to walk ratio last year.

?

????????????Sac Stateˇ?s Butcha (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out three and walked three on the night.

?

????????????Arizona and Sac State will meet up for game two of the three game set on Saturday at 2 p.m. Left-hander David Coulon (1-0) is the scheduled starter for the Wildcats.

Notes

Diallo Fon, who went 1-for-1 with three runs scored on Friday, remains perfect at the plate (2-for-2), but saw his scoring streak come to an end at six-straight when he was thrown out at home in the seventh. The second-year Wildcat had scored the first six times he was on base this season (twice as pinch runner at Georgia, once on his three-run homer at UGA and his first three times on base on Friday) ˇ? Senior Colt Sedbrook hit his first homer of the year, a solo shot to center in the second, to put Arizona up 2-0 ˇ? Guilmetˇ?s walk-free night was his fifth career start of seven innings or more without issuing a free pass ˇ?
