TUCSON -- Southern Mississippi's Jessica Holoway threw a three-hit shutout to pace the Golden Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Evansville in final-round action at Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament.
USM's typical pace of play was altered slightly by the team's eagerness to finish the game within 90 minutes in order to catch a flight home.
The Golden Eagles might have had to forfeit the contest if they couldn't continue play to its full conclusion.
Kenya Peters doubled in the top of the second and scored on a single by Kristie Martin to give USM a 1-0 lead.
Jesssica Holoway struck out seven consecutive batters in the first three innings and had 10. The Purple Aces threatened in the seventh with two singles to put a runner in scoring position, but Holoway struck out Trish Wetzel to end the game.
The Golden Eagles (9-9) finished 3-2 in tourney action while Evansville (10-12) was 1-4.
