WICHITA, Kan. ?- Wichita State’s Derek Schermerhorn doubled home the game-winning run with two outs in the ninth inning, as the Shockers (52-20) battled their way through the loser’s bracket to force Arizona (42-16) to a decisive regional final game on Monday with a 4-3 win over the Wildcats at Eck Stadium on Sunday.

With the contest knotted at 3-3 after 8 1/2 innings, WSU pinch hitter Bret Bascue drew a four-pitch walk off of UA reliever Daniel Schlereth to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Dusty Coleman sacrificed pinch runner Ryan Jones to second on a bunt to move the go-ahead run into scoring position.

Schlereth retired WSU leadoff hitter Andy Dirks on a pop out to Colt Sedbrook at shortstop for the second out of the frame to bring Schermerhorn to the plate.

The WSU first baseman battled Schlereth to a 2-2 count before lofting a curveball towards the gap in left-center. With the Arizona outfield shaded in for a potential play at the plate on a single, the ball found its way to the Eck Stadium turf for the game-winning hit.

The Wildcats, who have played in three one-run games in the postseason, drew first blood in Sunday’s contest on a Bill Rhinehart solo home run in the fourth, his second of the regional and his 13th of the season.

WSU answered immediately and took its first lead on a two-run single by Conor Gillaspie in the bottom of the frame.

A Shocker throwing error by Coleman at short in the fifth allowed Dwight Childs to score and tie the game at 2-2, but Wichita State regained the advantage when it plated a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Arizona tied the game in the seventh on a RBI-single by Sedbrook and was poised for more with runners on second and third, but WSU reliever Kyle Touchatt struck out C.J. Ziegler on a 3-2 fastball to end the inning and the scoring threat.

WSU closer Noah Krol (2-2) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of work in the eighth and ninth. He struck out one and walked one.

UA’s Schlereth (3-1) was charged with the loss, with the only hit he allowed in three innings of work coming on Schermerhorn’s game-winner in the ninth. The left-hander struck out one and walked three in his first loss of the year.

Arizona and Wichita State will meet up for the regional championship game on Monday at 7 p.m. CDT. The winner of the contest will advance on to the Super Regional round of the tournament against the winner of the Round Rock (Texas) Regional. Arizona has not named a starter for the Monday game.
