TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona women's golfer Brittany Benvenuto won the Pennsylvania State Amateur Championship Friday at Huntsville Golf Club in Lehman, Pa.
Benvenuto, a junior from Langhorne, Pa., needed only 13 holes to defeat Ali Bode, 6 and 5. Benvenuto was 3-up at the turn and needed just four holes on the back nine to close out the match.
A day earlier in the semifinals, Benvenuto defeated amateur golfing legend Carol Semple-Thompson, 4 and 3. Semple-Thompson, a 2008 inductee to the World Golf Hall of Fame, is one of only five people - male or female - to win three different USGA championship events.
Benvenuto ranked sixth on the Arizona squad in 2007-08 with an 82.07 stroke average in five starts (15 rounds played). Her best finish was a tie for 41st place at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in March with a 25-over 241 tally.
Back in June, Benvenuto finished in sixth place at the Women's Eastern Amateur Championship at DuPont Country Club in Wilmington, Del. She posted scores of 78, 71 and 79 to finish the event with a 228 total.
