13th-seeded Cats advance by virtue of a tiebreaker

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team defeated Duke in its opening match at the Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

Thirteenth-seeded Arizona pulled off the first-round upset by virtue of the tiebreaker, eight holes won to four, over fourth-seeded Duke after the matches were split 2-2-1.  The Wildcats were one of three lower-seeded teams to win opening-round matches in the field of 16 teams.

Arizona got individual wins from Travis Esway and Nathan Tyler and a halve from Josh Esler to send the match to the tiebreaker.  Esway defeated Michael Schachner, 3 and 2, while Tyler downed Clark Klaasen, 5 and 3, to earn UA’s two points.

Esler’s match proved to be pivotal, as he erased a 2-down deficit with five holes to play.  The junior from Wauconda, Ill., went par, birdie, birdie on his 14th, 15th and 16th holes of the day to get the match all square with Nathan Smith before both players finished with pars on the last two holes.

Arizona’s win set up a second-round meeting with fifth-seeded Wake Forest.  Play was suspended at 5:15 p.m. EST with the Wildcats leading in four of five matches through 15 holes played.  Action will resume tomorrow at 8 a.m. EST.

The Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship is being played at Mission Inn Golf and Tennis Resort.
