WALNUT CREEK, Calif.  University of Arizona diver Ben Grado was named the Pac-10’s Diver of the Month for his performances in January, announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.

Grado, a sophomore from Conifer, Colo., recorded five first-place event finishes to help the third-ranked Wildcats defeat No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Stanford and No. 3 California during the first month of 2010.

Against Stanford, Grado swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter events with first-place scores of 359.70 and 378.90.  The following day vs. California, Grado duplicated his feat, placing first in both 1-meter and 3-meter events with zone-qualifying scores of 340.20 and 369.23. The UA men’s team went on to win both dual meets.

Facing the top-ranked Longhorns the next week in Tucson, Grado placed first in the 1-meter event over the reigning NCAA individual champion with a score of 373.73 and was second in the 3-meter event with a score of 386.85.

Grado is qualified to compete in the NCAA Zone E Diving events in Austin, Texas March 12-14 to attempt to earn a bid to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.

This weekend, the Cats conclude its dual-meet schedule with an away meet at Arizona State where Grado will compete against highly-touted ASU diver Cameron Bradshaw.
