Liaw, Lashley in top three heading into tomorrow’s final round

TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona’s men’s golf team posted its first two under-par rounds of the season to claim the lead after 36 holes of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.

Bolstered by two players in the top three places, Arizona carded a nine-under 279 total in the first round, its first under-par round in three tournaments this season, then followed that up with a four-under 284 in the second round to hold the lead with a 13-under 563 total in the field of 19 teams.  The Wildcats carry a six-stroke lead into Saturday’s final round.  New Mexico (569), Nevada (577) and UNLV (577) and Brigham Young (579) round out the top five places.

Arizona’s 36-hole total of 563 in this event is 26 strokes better than it’s previous best effort after two rounds in either of its first two tournaments this season.

UA sophomore Henry Liaw holds a one-stroke lead over the field after posting a 36-hole total of 135 (-9).  The Rowland Heights, Calif., native fired a season low 67 (-5) in the first round and followed with a second-round 68.  They were his low rounds this season.

Teammate Nathan Lashley stands in a tie for third place after carding a two-round total of 139 (-5).  His opening-round 66 was a career low.  Fellow Wildcat Travis Esway continued a stellar week of play by tallying a 143 (-1) to stand in a tie for 12th place.  On Tuesday, Esway won the Ron Moore Invitational with a 12-under 204 total in his first collegiate event.

Sophomore Nathan Tyler collected rounds of 73 and 74 to stand in a tie for 31st place at 147.  Also competing for the Wildcats was freshman Trey Denton, who is tied for 56th place at 150 (+6), sophomore Josh Esler, who is tied for 71st place at 152 (+8), and senior Nick Juszczak, who is tied for 77th place at 153 (+9).

The William H. Tucker Intercollegiate concludes Saturday at the University of New Mexico’s The Championship Course, a par 72, 7,354-yard layout.
