Next Up For the Cats

The softball team (23-2) will be home this week to face Boston College on Tuesday, March 5 and Wednesday, March 6. This weekend the Cats hit the road and travel to Salt Lake City, Utah to face the Utes (10-21). Arizona will face Utah on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10.

Last Week

The Cats defeated Eastern Michigan 10-0 on Wednesday. Junior Lovie Jung was 2-for-3 at the plate and had three RBI. Arizona played host to the Hillenbrand Invitational from Friday through Sunday and went 5-0. On Friday in the Hillenbrand Invitational the Cats faced Southern Mississippi. Leneah Manuma went 2-for-2 at the plate, hit her third grand slam of the season, the Cats won 18-0. Also on Friday against Hawaii, Jenny Gladding hit a home run and pitched the Cats to a 5-1 victory. On Saturday the Cats faced Eastern Michigan and won 9-0. Gladding struck out nine batters and had her third shutout of the week. Against Evansville, Jennie Finch struckout nine batters and had her second no-hitter of the season. The Cats won 8-0. The Cats ended the tournament on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Long Beach State. Jenny Gladding struck out 12 batters.

The Coach

Arizona's Mike Candrea carries a career record of 890-172 (.838), accomplished in 17 years with the Wildcats. The 2001 Pac-10 co-Coach of the Year has led UA to six national titles and six Pacific-10 Conference championships. He should become only the third Division I coach in history to win 900 games this year. Candrea is joined by assistant coaches Nancy Evans and Larry Ray.

The Rankings

In the latest USA/Today Top 25 poll, Arizona is ranked No. 2. In the Preseason USA/Today Top 25 Arizona was ranked No. 1. Five other Pac-10 schools are in the USA Today/NFCA Top 10. Preason: No. 1, 2/20: No. 3, 2/27: N0. 2

Cats Winning Streaks

The Cats improved their home winning streak to 62 victories this past weekend. UA last lost in Hillenbrand on April 9, 2000, to No. 9 Stanford, 4-3, in eight innings.

Record Breaker

By defeating Cal State Northridge on February 24 Jennie Finch broke the NCAA record for most consecutive wins. She has a winning record of 13-0 on the season and has won 52 consecutive games. Her last loss was on April 21, 2000, against Arizona State. The previous NCAA record of 50 was set by Rebecca Aase of Florida State from 1991 to 1993.

Bangin' Them Silly

In 25 games the Cats have hit 45 home runs. Opponents have only hit nine. The 2001 team hit a school-record 126 home runs. Leneah Manuma leads the team with 13 home runs. She only needs six more to tie her career high. Manuma has also hit three of the Cats' eight grand slams. In the Hillenbrand Invitational, Manuma hit three home runs, Jenny Gladding hit three and Mackenzie Vandergeest hit two.

UA Softball Notes

Jennie Finch and Jenny Gladding have struck out a combined 212 batters in 25 games, which is eight batters a game... The Cats' six home runs against Southern Mississippi last week ties the school record for most home runs in a game... Manuma leads the team with 46 RBI and 13 home runs... Manuma has a batting average of .677 when bases are loaded... The team's overall batting average is .356 and opponents batting average is .131... Arizona outscored opponents' 190-28... The Cats have scored 45 runs in the first inning, which is more than the total runs they have given up... Leneah Manuma also leads the team in slugging percentage with 1.076... Arizona has scored 149 runs in the first four innings and have only given up five runs in late innings... Finch's ERA in 11 games is 0.59... Finch has eight shutouts on the season... Jennie Finch now has 98 career victories... Finch only needs three more victories to pass Susie Parras' record of 101 victories into the N0. 4 UA all-time spot... Arizona was No. 2 in the nation last year with an average attendance of 1, 660.

Injury Note

Freshman Courtney Fossatti will be out for a possible three weeks with a stress fracture in her left foot. Fossatti is hitting a .475 batting average with 11 runs, 19 hits and three RBI. Carrie Hagen, Crystal Farley, and Allyson Von Liechtenstein have played left field in her absence.

The Cats Go to Washington

The 2001 National Championship team will travel to Washington D.C. from March 11-13. They will be at the White House to meet President Bush on Wednesday morning.

Softball Tickets

Most of Hillenbrand Stadium's reserved seating has been sold out on a season-ticket basis, and fans are purchasing outfield general admission seating as season tickets. Contact the McKale Center Ticket Office for more information at 621-2287 or 1-800-452-2287. Arizona has an average attendance of 1420 per game.
