Wildcats Finish Second at 2004 Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas ?- The Arizona men’s and women’s swimming team completed the 2004 Texas Invitational with both teams finishing in second-place behind Texas. The women posted a score of 670 points and the men tallied 702 points.


            The women’s team earned a total of 22 NCAA automatic qualifying times and 17 consideration times over the past three days of competition. In the 200y backstroke, senior Jessica Hayes finished third with an automatic qualifying time of 1:55.93. Three automatic qualifying times were posted in the 100y free from freshman Lacey Nymeyer, who finished first (48.80), freshman Courtney Cashion placed fifth (49.38) and junior Jenna Gresdal finished first in the consolation finals and ninth overall (48.96).


            “We have never had a qualifying meet like this before,” said head coach Frank Busch. “The team swam great and Simon (Burnett) had one of the greatest swims in collegiate history last night, I’m very pleased with the turn out of this meet.”


            Junior Erin Sieper was first in the 200y breaststroke posting an automatic qualifying time (2:11.29). Senior Emily Mason placed first in he 200 fly (1:55.40) and sophomore Whitney Myers was second (1:56.11). The 400y free relay ?'A’ team of junior Marshi Smith, Gresdal, Cashion, and junior Ryann Hackett finished first (3:17.55) and the ?'B’ team of Hayes, Nymeyer, Myers and Mason finished second (3:18.25), both posting automatic qualifying times.


            The men’s team tallied 10 NCAA automatic qualifying times and 23 consideration times over the past three days of competition. Tonight, in the 1650 freestyle, junior Tyler DeBerry finished fourth with a consideration time of 15:10.52 and freshman Nick Thoman finished fourth as well in the 200 backstroke (1:45.19).


            Junior Simon Burnett was first in the 100y freestyle with an automatic qualifying time of 42.96 while sophomore Adam Ritter and Jonas Persson finished fifth and seventh with NCAA consideration times. Junior Lyndon Ferns was first in the consolation finals placing ninth overall with an automatic qualifying time of 42.57.


            Junior Dave Rollins and senior Nate Stevens tied for first-place in the 200y breaststroke with a time if 1:57.56 and freshman Ivan Barnes was fourth (1:58.60). DeBerry was sixth in the 200y butterfly posting another consideration time of 1:47.78. To finish the meet, the 400y free relay team of Burnett, Ritter, freshman Albert Subirats and freshman Bart Steninger finished in first-place with a time of 2:56.71.


            The Arizona swimming and diving teams will return to action after winter break on Jan. 7, 2005 when the women host Oregon State and the men host The University of British Colombia at 2 p.m. (MST), at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
