Arizona vs. No. 20 Utah

Nov. 26, 2005

Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini: “Tonight was frustrating to lose. This is the first time that we have played a full game and played well, so it’s hard to lose a game like that. Utah capitalized on all of our mistakes.”

“We had a nice lead in the second half, but #21 came in and hurt us from three. We allowed them too many second-chance shots.”

“I am proud of our team. Utah is a good team and you have to give credit to them.”

“We need to make a better percentage from three, which is something we will work on.”

“Ashley has a little pulled calf muscle and she’s not 100 percent, which hurt us tonight.”

“Linda’s great and she has improved so much from a year ago. She’s matured not only on the court, but off the court, as well. She has become a great team leader.”

“The hardest thing right now is that we are depending on a lot of different people. This week is going to be a good teaching week.”

Junior guard Joy Hollingsworth: “We thought that we had it. We never let up and we kept fighting. It is definitely a heartbreaker.”

“They have a lot of three-point shooters and we didn’t get out on them. We can shoot the three better. We need to work on rhythm and getting our feet set.”

“We like a fast-paced transition game. Our run was done with transition play.”

Senior guard Natalie Jones: “We weren’t getting any second shots. They would go down and capitalize. There were a lot of mental errors. We have to adjust to playing with young girls. We’re still growing as a team. Everyone needs to come along with their mental game.”

On the first half

“We were playing our game and not letting them control the tempo. Our inside-outside game was working.”

On traveling this past weekend

“It was a long trip. We are still getting over it but it wasn’t the reason we lost.”

On guard penetration

“It is the biggest part of our game. We can all drive off the dribble especially when our shots aren’t falling.”

Utah Head Coach Elaine Elliott: “The turnovers we committed didn’t turn into points right away. We had some traveling violations and three-second violations. Those didn’t turn out to be that big of a factor.”

“Julie (Larsen) has the capacity to hit big shots. She obviously hit some in that stretch in the second half. That’s what we had been missing ?- consistency in shooting on the road.”

“Marie (Warner) has some abilities. She just needs to pay attention to the details and learn the things that are going to keep her on the floor.”

“We’ve struggled so mightily in the post positions. We have not shown any ability to use our taller post players to our advantage against smaller teams. Tonight we went to a smaller lineup and got good effort.”

“This was a difficult road game. I don’t care who you play in the Pac-10 on the road, it’s going to be a challenge. We’re happy to get this one.”

Utah senior guard Julie Larsen: “It was a hard-fought game. It was a battle to the end.”

“We had to play small. Both teams played hard. We capitalized when we needed to. Coach told us to keep playing hard. She said if we get open shots to take them and if not, to pass it.”

“I hadn’t been shooting well. I kept shooting and I guess they finally started to fall.”
