PRINCETON, N.J.--The University of Arizona soccer team beat Princeton Thursday afternoon in the Princeton Invitational, 2-1, to boost its early season progress with a victory over a 2004 College Cup semi-finalist team on its home field.

The win snapped the Tigers' home field winning streak at 19 games and dropped Princeton to 0-3. UA improved to 2-1-1. The Tigers were No. 14 in the preseason rankings.

The Wildcats put the first goal on the board at 37:51 in the first half. Freshman Gianna DeSavario and senior Nikki David took on the Tiger defense. DeSavario found a hole and passed it through to an open David who placed the ball into the net past Tiger goalkeeper Emily Vogelzang for her first goal of the season. The teams cleared the field at halftime with Arizona leading 1-0.

Less than four minutes into the second half, Princeton tied the game with a pass from Diana Matheson to Emily Behncke. The goal is Behncke’s first on the season. The Wildcats scored with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation with a goal by freshman London King. The second goal resulted from a passing series from senior Mallory Miller to David and then to King for the goal. King now leads the team, along with Miller, in goals scored with two.

Head Coach Dan Tobias felt the Wildcats came out lose in the second half.

“After Princeton tied it up we did a god job of fighting to keep the ball better,” Tobias said. “We came out very lose after the half and we had talked about being tighter at halftime. We were eventually able to generate quite a few chances. We felt like we did a decent job in that aspect.”

Tobias also discussed the importance of beating a high caliber team like Princeton.

“This is a tough place to play,” Tobias explained. “ The are a very organized and well coached team. We are very pleased with coming away from this game with a win against a quality team.”

The Wildcats will next take on Penn in the Princeton Invitational on Sat., Sept. 10 at 1:30 a.m. (EST) from Princeton, N.J.
