LAKESIDE, Calif. - Arizona's men's golf team is tied for fourth place at the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif. heading into the final round of the play. UA carded a 732 (+12) in the first two rounds.
Arizona has four golfers in the top 23, including two in the top 10.
A couple of freshman, Tye Beall and Erik Oja led the way for Arizona, each carding day-one totals of 143 (-1). The two are tied for eighth place. Beall's previous high finish is a T21st place end at the Anteater Invitational; Oja's is T12 finish at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate.
San Diego's second round was 16 shots better than any other team's, propelling them to a 10 stroke lead in the event; the Toreros are the only team under par. Host San Diego State is in second at two-over. Nevada is five-over followed by Arizona and UC Santa Barbara at 12-over.
Glen Scher of UC Santa Barbara is seven-under and in the lead individually. Scott Smith from Nevada is six-under after back-to-back rounds of 69 (-3). A pair of Toreros is tied for third; Alex Ching and Manav Shah are five under. Ching had a second-round 64, three strokes better than any other round on the day. New Mexico's John Caitlin and San Diego State's J.J. Spaun are three-under.
Straying from the normal play five, count four scoring system to the play six, count five system hurt the Wildcats on day one, as evident by Arizona's individual standings. The Cats have four golfers in the top 23 and two in the bottom third.
Following Beall and Oja for the Cats is Tarquin MacManus at one-over. The senior is tied for 17th. The top-20 finish would be the fifth of the season in ten tries. Jonathan Khan, two days after winning the NIT, is tied for 23rd and two-over. Juan Pablo Hernandez and Trent Redfern each carded second-round scores of 81 (+9). Hernandez is tied for 73rd and Redfern is tied for 91st.
The tournament is contested at the Barona Creek Golf Club, a par 72, 7,374 yard course. The final round is Friday with a 7:30 a.m. PDT shotgun start.
