TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team will open its 2011 spring season as hosts of the Arizona Invitational, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, at Arizona National Golf Club. It is the first major college golf event of the spring season.
One of the finest college golf events in the nation, the 2011 Arizona Invitational is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at Arizona National, a par 71, 6,793-yard layout. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, Jan. 31 with continuous play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. MST. The final 18 holes will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
Two of the teams in the field of 16 finished the fall season ranked in the top 25 places of the (Nov. 17) Golf World/Nike Golf Division I Coaches' Poll, which includes (ranking): Brigham Young, California (14), California-Irvine, California-Riverside, Fresno State, Hartford, New Mexico, Pacific, Pepperdine, San Diego State (16), Texas-El Paso, Texas-San Antonio, UNLV, Utah and host Arizona (two squads).
Over the last 11 years of this event, Arizona has finished in the top-three places six times, including wins in 2003 and 2004. In that same span, Wildcat golfers have claimed individual medalist honors four times, most recently last season by Rich Saferian.
