A Five Inning Affair: The baseball team jumped right into action on the first day of fall practice. Coach Lopez's team split in half and played the first of what will be 12 intrasquad games. The White team (home) defeated the Gray team (away), 3-0, in the five inning game. The White team scored all three runs in the second inning off of Gray starter Chris Goodman. Junior Ken Riley led off the inning with a double to left-center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After a walk to Justyn St. Clair put runners on the corners, centerfielder Clayton Bried singled to right field. The hit, misplayed by Chris Marini in right, scored Riley from third and placed runners on second and third with no outs. Goodman retired Ryan Wilmer on a strikeout for the first out of the inning, but saw his good fortune fade as newcomer Rene Arriaga laced a single up the middle to score St. Clair and Bried. The white team pitchers had little trouble on the afternoon. Starter Sean Rierson and reliever Tony Sulser combined for the five inning, five hit shutout. Rierson worked three innings and struck out two. Sulser came on in the fourth and struck out the side in the fifth to end the game.

Coach Lopez's Thoughts: "I would give today about a C grade, just based on how we played. We wanted to see how hard these guys play the game and today was not very good, but we'll get that corrected. We want them to play the game the right way, with an honest effort. The players responded to what we had to say today and we'll see how they are tomorrow."
Notes and Stuff: Coach Lopez and the media relations office have announced that he will be available to speak with the media prior to practice. Media representatives can speak with the coach a half-hour before the practice is scheduled to begin (i.e. 1:30-2:00 on days that practice starts at 2 p.m.).Players may be interviewed after practice at 5 p.m.
