Pepsi Red-Blue Game

Nov. 3, 2005

Arizona Head Coach Lute Olson

“A number of guys did a good job.  Bret [Brielmaier] dislocated his elbow earlier in the week, and I felt he did well.  Tonight we got a good effort out of Mohamed [Tangara]; I thought he did a lot of things well.  Marcus [Williams], other than the turnovers, showed that he’s going to be a valuable player for us.  As for Mustafa [Shakur], scoring opportunities will come, but the primary thing we need him to do are the things a point guard does.”

“The Red Team had five guys in double figures, and the Blue Team had two guys with eight points, and three in double figures, and that’s exactly what you need.”

“We’re really looking forward to the two exhibition games next week.  I’m excited to see how we do against an opponent with five of our guys on the court at the same time.  Hopefully we’re ready to play about 10 guys deep.  I hope to utilize that many, especially in exhibition.”

“I felt we played hard, but I’m not happy when we don’t get people back on defense.  The veterans know that if somebody is slow to get back, he’ll be sitting next to me in a hurry.”

“The young guys started out really well, but were not able to maintain that the entire game.  That’s where the experience factors come into play.”

“[When Jawann McClellan ran off the floor] it frightened me more than anything else.  He landed awkwardly, and it scared me, but the good news is he couldn’t have come down any harder on it than he did, but it didn’t hurt him.”\

“Marcus [Williams] did a nice job.  He’s the most alert of the young guys in terms of reading switches and getting open.  Like I said, other than the turnovers, he did a good job.  He’s very coachable, and will learn a lot from the tape.

Player Quotes

Sophomore G Jawann McClellan

“I wanted to come back out in the second half.  There’s no telling when the fans are going to get to see me again, and I wanted to tough [my sore ankle] out.  I want to be a leader, and I may not always be 100%, but that’s alright.”

Senior G Chris Rodgers

“I thought we had a good effort, and all the guys picked up the intensity in the second half.”

“I want to come back as fast as I can.  [Working back from injury] is going to be a process.  It will definitely feel good to play a game next week, and I definitely will be back for our games in Maui.  Our trainer and lifting coach have been working hard with me.”

Senior F/G Hassan Adams

“Everyone came back to the locker room with a smile tonight, and nobody got hurt.  So, I think we got what we wanted.”

“Everybody will come out with a bumps [and bruises], but everyone overall is [feeling] well and healthy.  I think it’s going to be a full year for us.”

“The big thing for us right now is getting to play someone else.  It gets hold playing the same guys in practice every day.  We’re really looking forward to playing a new team.  The defense will definitely be picked [in the upcoming games].  We’re still just getting used to picking up full court.”
