TUCSON - University of Arizona Wildcat volleyball head coach Dave Rubio announced the hiring of Melissa Walker as an assistant coach on Tuesday. Walker spent the previous season as UA's volunteer assistant coach.
"We're excited for Melissa to join us as an assistant coach," Rubio said. "We feel she has exceptional teaching skills and it will be a smooth transition to her new role with her experience as our volunteer assistant."
Prior to her arrival in Tucson, Walker spent three seasons as an assistant coach with Long Beach State. Her coaching responsibilities while an assistant at CSULB include scheduling and recruiting as well as on-court duties.
She was a former player for State (1997-2000) and was a member of the 1998 National Championship team that went 36-0. Walker was named team captain in 2000 and was a three-time Big West Conference All-Academic selection. She played in every match of her career as a 49er.
Walker was active in the club volleyball scene in Long Beach as a coach and trainer. She has been the head coach for the 14, 16, and 18's Elite Teams, and has produced 13 Junior Olympic All-Americans, one Junior Olympic Most Valuable Player and one Junior National Team member. Her Cal Juniors Volleyball Club was the 2005 Junior Olympic (16's) National Gold Medal winner.
In 2003 and 2004, Walker served as the assistant women's volleyball coach with the University of Iowa and was responsible for travel, budgeting and recruiting.
She completed her degree from CSULB in psychology and graduated cum laude in 2001.
UA will begin the 2011 slate on Aug. 26 against Wichita State at a tournament in Hawai'i.
