TUCSON, Ariz. -
Arizona women’s basketball opens its regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 at CSU Bakersfield in Bakersfield, Calif. Tipoff is set for 8:30 p.m. PT.
Under fifth-year head coach Niya Butts, Arizona returns three starters and welcomes six newcomers, including three true freshmen for the 2012-13 season. Senior guard Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.), a three-time All-Pac12 honoree, leads the Wildcats with her returning 17.0 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in 2011-12.
The Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, under second-year head coach Greg McCall, suffered an injury-ridden season in 2011-12, playing only six players on eight different occasions. The Roadrunners will open the season with 15 players on the roster, including senior Amber Williams, who became the seventh CSUB player to score at least 1,000 points in her career. She enters her senior season with 1,136 points and ranks fifth in school history in all-time scoring.
In Arizona’s exhibition game versus Grand Canyon, Whyte scored 27 points, had eight steals, five rebounds and four assists.
Junior forward Alli Gloyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) posted 14 points, while junior guard Kama Griffitts (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) added seven points and junior guard Carissa Crutchfield (Ft. Gibson) had four assists.
