Arizona volleyball sophomore Tiffany Owens was named Pacific 10 Conference Player of the Week for her efforts against the Oregon schools this weekend, the league office announced Monday morning.
Owens led the Wildcats to their first Pac-10 weekend sweep since 2006 as they upset No. 8 Oregon, 3-1, and earned a three-set sweep over Oregon State. In the two matches, the San Bernardino, Calif. native hit .400, while averaging five kills a set.
“Obviously I’m excited for her and our team,” Arizona head coach Dave Rubio said. “Without the support of her teammates it would be difficult for her to earn this honor.”
This was the first weekly award for the Arizona volleyball team since Kim Glass won one in 2005.
Against Oregon, Owens registered he second highest kill total of the year with 22 and also added eight digs and three blocks in the team’s third win over a top-12 team in 2008.
Sunday, the outside hitter recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 17 digs in the 3-0 win over Oregon State.
Owens currently leads Arizona in kills with 288 and is second in digs with 248.
This is her first Pac-10 Player of the Week award and the 26th all-time for the Arizona volleyball team.
The Wildcats head on the road to face the Washington schools in their final weekend of the season. Arizona takes on Washington Friday night at 8 p.m. local time and plays Washington State at the same time Saturday.
