Swim and Dive Prepare for Texas & SMU

This Week in the Pool ?- The No. 2 Arizona women’s and the No. 5 men’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Austin, Texas on Jan. 19-20 to take on Texas and Southern Methodist University at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Competition will begin at 7 p.m. (CST) on Friday and at 12 p.m. on Saturday.


A Look at the Opponents?- The men will be competing against top-ranked Texas, who currently post a 5-0 record for the 2006-07 season. The Longhorns recently defeated the No, 9 Georgia Bulldogs 161-135 by winning eight of 14 swimming events on Jan. 13.


            The SMU men’s squad is currently 1-1 overall and recently completed competition at the Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Invitational on Jan. 13 where they finished third with 305 points


            The Arizona women will face two nationally ranked teams including No. 8 SMU, who post a 4-2 overall record. The Mustangs completed competition against Texas A & M on Jan. 13, falling for the second time this season to the Aggies 178.5 ?- 115.5.


            The Texas women are ranked twelfth nationally and post a 1-5 overall record. The Longhorns recently fell to No. Georgia 169-131, however Texas won five of eight individual events.


Arizona/Texas History ?- The Wildcats and the Longhorns have engaged in dual meet action for eight consecutive years. On the men’s side, Texas leads the series 7-1 and for the women, Arizona leads 6-2 since 1999.


What Happened Last Year ?-  On Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, The fifth-ranked Arizona men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams completed their final home dual-meet of the 2005-06 season with victories over Texas. The women downed the No. 10 Longhorns 202-146, while the men won 195-155.


Arizona’s Last time in the Water ?- The women’s team posted their first losses of the season last week to top-ranked Stanford (143-94) and No. 4 Cal (159-142), while the men’s team was defeated by the second-ranked Cardinal 131-110, posting their second loss of the season as well.


Arizona in the Rankings ?- The Wildcat women currently post a 5-2 (3-2 Pac-10) record, giving them the

No. 2 position in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America poll, while the men are currently ranked fifth with an overall record of 4-2 (1-2 Pac-10).


Incredible Individuals ?- In the latest NCAA top-times list, several Wildcats have made their mark, as a total of 12 different swimmers appear in the top-five of 19 individual events.

Arizona’s Next Action - The swimming and diving teams will return to the pool on Feb. 3 to host intra-state rival Arizona State for the final dual meet of the season. Competition will begin at 1 p.m. (MST) at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
