TUCSON, Ariz. ?- For the first time this season, Arizona did not win the doubles point. The Wildcats, however, were still able to come back and get the win, 6-1. In the No. 1 spot, sophomore Claudio Christen and senior Jeff Groslimond fell to Pacific’s Jorgen Vestil and Vladimir Zdravkovic, 3-8. On court 2, senior Roger Matalonga and sophomore Francois VanderMerwe lost a close match to Arnar Sigurdsson and Tim Koniarski, 8-9 (5-7). Sophomore Bruno Alcala and redshirt freshman Peter Zimmer improved their record to 3-0 on the season by defeating the Tiger’s Mortiz Starke and Alan Kelly, 8-6.

Arizona was able to reclaim momentum and sweep the singles matches. Alcala tallied the Wildcat’s first point by defeating Kelly, 6-3, 6-1. Zimmer was able to easily overcome the Tiger’s Austin Kakar in the No. 6 position winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3.

“Right after losing doubles, the attitude in singles was awesome,” said Alcala. “We were able to come back and get the win.”

One court over, sophomore Jason Labrosse defeated Koniarski in three sets, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Christen clinched the victory for the Wildcats by defeating Zdravkovic, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3. Groslimond then scored an upset victory for Arizona, beating No. 67 Arnar Sigurdsson in straight sets, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-5). In the No. 1 spot, Matalonga completed the sweep at singles by beating Vestil, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The victory gives Arizona a 4-0 record and its best start since 2002 when they started the season 5-0.

“The best thing is that we are 4-0 and the guys are finding a way to win,” assistant coach Cory Hubbard said. “The concentration, focus and heart are really there right now. Now we have two weeks off to get healthy.”

The Wildcats will return to action in two weeks at the LaNelle Robson Center, Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. against Fresno State.
