TUCSON - No. 2 UCLA at No. 1 Arizona -- Pac-10 Softball

Seventh-inning home runs by Mackenzie Vandergeest and Shelly Schultz brought Arizona back from the dead and the top-ranked Cats scored all their runs in dramatic fashion to beat No. 2 UCLA, 7-5, in both teams' Pac-10 opener Saturday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.

The victory kept UA unbeaten at home at 20-0 and pushed the team to 37-1 overall. UCLA's Keira Goerl, untouchable most of the game, dropped her first decision of the year (15-1). UCLA dropped to 27-2.

The Cats appeared to be on the verge of being shut out for the first time in their last 85 games, dating to a Feb. 21, 2003, loss to Oklahoma State, 1-0, in Tucson, by coming up with a huge rally on three hits in the seventh

A nervous crowd of 1,361 watched as Arizona couldn't bring across a run through six innings despite some opportunities, stranding seven base runners before the late rally.

UA starter Alicia Hollowell set down the last 13 batters she faced and improved her record to 24-0.

The Bruins jumped to what appeared to be a insurmountable 5-0 lead in the second. Claire Sua singled to center and pinch-runner Amanda Simpson stole second, then a single by Jodie Legaspi put two runners in scoring position when the cutoff throw sailed high and allowed Legaspi to reach second. Hollowell walked Emily Zaplatosch to load the bases, and then a single by Lisa Dodd drove in Simpson.

Hollowell struck out Whitney Holum and Tara Henry, but leadoff hitter Caitlin Benyi hit a grand slam to deep left-center to make it 5-0.

UA stranded two runners in the first and three runners in the second to miss early scoring opportunities. In the second Samantha Quintero doubled over the centerfielder's head and UCLA pitcher Keira Goerl walked Crystal Farley and Caitlin Lowe to load the bases. But Goerl got Autmn Champion to ground into a force play at the plate.

In the Bruins' half of the third, a one-out walk by Sua, a single by Legaspi and an error by UA shortstop Kristie Fox loaded the bases again. But Dodd forced Sua at the plate for the second out, then Hollowell struck out Holum to end the threat.

Goerl struck out nine and gave up eight hits. Hollowell struck out 11 and gave up five hits.

In the seventh, the Cats got a walk from Farley, a single through short by Lowe, and another walk to Champion to load the bases with one out, then Wendy Allen drew a walk to force in a run. Then Vandergeest yanked a deep ball down the left field line for a grand slam to tie the game. An out later, Jackie Coburn walked and then Schultz towered one over the left field fence for the winning runs.

UA's game Friday against Washington and UCLA's Friday game at Arizona State were both rained out, hence the Saturday game being the league opener. The teams complete the two-game series at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hillenbrand.
