Senior center granted a fifth year of eligibility

?

TUCSON, Ariz. ?C University of Arizona menˇ?s basketball player Kirk Walters was granted a medical hardship and will receive a fifth year of eligibility, as ruled by the Pacific-10 Conferenceˇ?s faculty athletics representatives.

?

Walters, a 6-foot-11, 254-pound, senior from Grand Rapids, Mich., sat out much of the 2006-07 after being diagnosed with Mononucleosis on Nov. 15.? For the season, the center saw action just two games (totaling three minutes), where he collected one rebound and missed his only field goal attempt.

?

ˇ?Iˇ?m glad that we can count on having him back,ˇ± said head coach Lute Olson .? ˇ?In a way, this was a blessing for Kirk.? The extra year of maturity will benefit him next season.ˇ±

?

In his four-year career, Walters has appeared in 80 games (26 starts), and averaged 3.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.9 blocked shots, while shooting 54.8 percent (103-of-188) from the field.

?

He will be eligible for the 2007-08 season and joins a group of 10 returning letterwinners from last seasonˇ?s 20-11 club that advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 23rd consecutive season.
