MIDLAND, Texas ?- The Arizona men’s tennis team completed first days play at the Midland Tennis Classic in Midland, Texas. Competing for the Wildcats were seniors Paul Warkentin and Colin O’Grady.
In singles competition, both Wildcats went 1-1 on their first day of competition. In his first match of the day, Warkentin defeated Roman Borvanov of the University of Portland, 6-0, 6-4. Following up on Warkentin’s well-fought match, fellow teammate O’Grady defeated Ben Harknett of Rice University 7-6, 3-6, 6-4.
Later on in the afternoon, both of the Wildcats resumed action. Warkentin fell to Tony Haerle of Rice University 7-6, 7-6. O’Grady also fell in his afternoon match as he was defeated by Brett Joelson of Texas A&M 6-4, 7-5.
“We played some tough competition today, but these matches will only make us better,” Warkentin said after their defeats today.
To end the day for the Wildcats, Warkentin and O’Grady paired up in doubles competition facing Michael Innerebner and Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech. Despite the Wildcats great effort in this match, they fell in their final match of the day, 9-7.
The Wildcats will continue action as Warkentin and O’Grady are slated to have first serve at 9 a.m. Saturday Oct. 16.
