Urquidi, Zafiros Clinch Titles at Aggie Invite

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- In his first fall tournament as a Wildcat freshman Mario Urquidi clinched his first title winning the singles white main draw of the Aggie Invitational. The El Paso, Texas native went undefeated this weekend in singles action. Junior Jason Zafiros also came out victorious winning the crimson singles back draw title Sunday at the New Mexico State University Tennis Center.


The Wildcats competed in all of the finals of the four draws of the invitational.  Senior Geoff Embry and Zafiros finished runners-up in the doubles main draw and Embry claimed a second place finish in the crimson singles main draw.


Urquidi faced Evan Corona-Saunders of New Mexico in the finals of the white singles main draw and defeated him in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. The freshman went 4-0 for the weekend.


Zafiros who is ranked No. 107 in the ITA preseason rankings topped Rodrigo Almeidra of Western New Mexico in the crimson singles back draw, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch the title.


Embry who went 3-1 on the weekend fought a tough match against New Mexico State's Arthur Surreaux in the finals of the singles crimson main draw.  The senior from Phoenix, Ariz. fell in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.


Before that, Embry teamed up with Zafiros in the finals of the doubles main draw to face Surreaux and Jim Brouleau. The Wildcat duo fell 8-5 in a tough match.


The Wildcats will be next in action in Tulsa Okla. at the ITA All-American event starting Oct. 2.
