TUCSON - Hillenbrand Invitational

Game 1 - Georgia Tech vs. UTEP

Jessica Sallinger (10-2) held Texas El Paso to three hits in helping lead Georgia Tech to a 7-0 victory over the Miners in round-robin action at the Hillenbrand Invitational softball tournament Friday afternoon.

Georgia Tech scored five runs with three hits in the top of the second. The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with two walks and a base hit, then had a bloop single by Kristina Hull, an RBI fielder's choice by Kirin Kumar, a sacrifice fly by Soraya Reddick.and two-run double by Amy Hosier.

The Miners put runners in scoring position with a single by Denise Emmons and a double by Jawauna Davis in the bottom of the inning, but Sallinger struck out two batters to end the threat. Davis also had UTEP's other hit, a single in the seventh.

Tara Knudsen followed a walk by Hosier with a home run to left field to increase the lead to 7-0 in the top of the fourth.

Tech improved to 17-4 for the season. UTEP, in its first year of softball play, dropped to 3-8. Malia Simmons (0-5) took the losss for the Miners.

Hillenbrand Invitational

Game 2 - Northern Iowa vs. Indiana

Indiana scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to give it a run-rule victory over Northern Iowa, 8-0.

IU's Mariangee Bogado allowed only hit in four innings of pitching, and got an inning of help from Megan Roark.

Indiana opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. Val White led off with a walk, and two outs later Karly McCormack tripled to center field. She scored on an infield error on the next play for a 2-0 lead.

Catcher Tory Yamaguchi's three-run home run to left in the second inning pushed the lead to 5-0. The Hoosiers picked up a run on an RBI infield grounder by Bogado and a two-run single by Kim Richards to end the game on the mercy rule.

Erin Strellner doubled with one out in the third for NIU, the only hit off Bogado (5-2). Julie Gerdes (2-1) took the loss for NIU (3-7). Indiana improved to 6-9 on the year.
