Arizona interim head coach Russ Pennell:
I saw great improvement in our team from last week, especially in the second half. We still need to increase ball pressure. On the offensive end, I was pleased with the overall shot selection. Our guys did a phenomenal job finding Jordan Hill. They recognized that he had a hot hand."
Our organization was better. Guys huddled more on dead ball situations. They hustled over to the bench more so we could get our point across and so they could have more time to rest up.
On junior Jordan Hill
His confidence is really good, as is his skill development. I'm okay with him setting his shot at the sixteen- or seventeen-foot range. He is a tough match for guys defending him.
On freshman Kyle Fogg
He deserved to have the opportunity to start tonight. He does exactly what we ask him to do. He is solid, not going to make mistakes, but he also isn't going to take many risks, which we will have to work on.
"We got off to a pretty good start in both games, even though we were in foul trouble. Our youthfulness kills us sometimes. We just want them to value their possessions. We have to create runs off the defensive end. We have our spurts when we lock down on the defensive end."
Arizona Player Quotes
Junior Forward Chase Budinger
On Jordan Hill's performance:
He has certainly improved on not traveling. He has worked on his footwork, which has helped him beat people man-to-man and gets shots up close. He has also hit some nice outside shots.
It's really important that he stays out of foul trouble. We need him to rebound shots, to contest shots, and, of course, score. It is his own opinion that he wasn't focused on the last few games, but I can tell he is really starting to focus on the little things in practice.
On being ready for the season:
We are getting better, which is exactly what we need to do, just keep improving. We got the win tonight and that is what we want. It doesn't matter if one person stands out or the whole team is consistent, we just want to win.
On the defense
The pressing was vital for us. They were getting tired and we got easy turnovers just from the pressure. The zone defense is strange for us, but it will help us. It will be easier for Jordan to foul less and it will be nice for Nic and I to rest when we are playing 40 minutes.
On 2nd half performance
We did a better job in the second half of not fouling and contesting shots; they only scored twenty points. That was a nice accomplishment.
On Coach Pennell
When he needs to get on us, he does and he talks to us when we are doing well. It is a lot different than last year. He speaks to us about the negative things and the positive things in the locker room.
Freshman Guard Kyle Fogg
On getting the start
I was definitely a little nervous, but I was confident because I have such a strong team behind me. I just had to work the ball around and do my role. The coaches told me I got the start because I've been focusing a lot on defense. I've been hustling and getting a lot of tipped balls. I know my primary role is defense, I don't have to score a lot because I have such a strong offense behind me.
On competing with the other guards for playing time
There's always big competition in practice between me, Brendon (Lavender), Garland (Judkins), and the other guards. We're all very competitive, and the coaches make each drill in practice a competition.
I've been playing the two guard. I've been playing that since high school, so I'm pretty comfortable. I have been working on my point guard skills so that I can help Nic (Wise) out.
I think we're ready for the season. We work hard every day in practice. We're all really excited for the season, we just have to come out tomorrow and get ready for Monday's game.
