LONG BEACH, Calif. (December 3, 1998) - The University of Arizona swept Fresno State, 16-14, 15-9, 15-11, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at The Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. The Wildcats will face the winner of tonight's second match, Long Beach State vs. Southern, Friday night at The Pyramid.

Fresno State led throughout game one, including 8-4. The Wildcats fought back and tied the game 9-9. The Bulddogs then led 12-10, but Arizona again tied the game at 12-12 and 13-13. Fresno State served for the game at 14-13, but a hitting error gave Arizona the serve. The Wildcats tied the game at 14-14 and took the lead 15-14 after a block by Jill Talbot, then won the game on a service ace by Keisha Johnson Demps.

Arizona controlled both game two and three. In game two, after leading 8-6, the Wildcats went on a 5-1 run to lead 13-7. In game three, Arizona jumped out to an 8-1 lead, but the Bulldogs rallied to close the deficit to 13-11. A hitting error and a kill by Raelene Elam gave the Wildcats a 15-11 victory.

Arizona (22-6) outhit the Bulldogs, .276-.190. Elam and Demps each had 16 kills for the Wildcats. Fresno State (18-11) saw Shanus Bennett lead the offense with 13 kills.
