TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona got a 65 from sophomore Chris Nallen, but it wasn't enough to keep the team out of eighth place after Friday's first round of the PING-U.S. Collegiate Championships.

Arizona carded an opening-round 290 (+2) and stands in eighth place, twelve strokes behind tournament-leader Texas' 278 (-10). Houston (280), Oklahoma State (281) and Georgia Tech (282) round out the top four places. Oklahoma State's Hunter Mahan shot a 62 (-10) to claim the individual lead. His total was just two strokes off the course record.

While playing in separate pairings, Mahan and Nallen essentially went stroke-for-stroke all day, as each made the turn with identical five-under-par 31s. UA's Nallen took an early lead on the back nine with a birdie on No. 12, but Mahan registered birdies on each of the last four holes to come in with the three-stroke lead.

It could have been worse for the Wildcats without Nallen's first-round efforts, as just one other UA player finished at par on the day. Junior Ricky Barnes tallied an opening-round 72 (E) and is tied for 18th place. Also competing for the Arizona varsity was freshman Kipp Riehle, who is tied for 30th at 74 (+2), junior Reid Hatley, who is tied for 56th at 79 (+7) and freshman Andy Connell, who is tied for 62nd at 84 (+2).

The 54-hole, 10-team tournament continues through Sunday at Tucson National Golf Course, a par 72, 7,094-yard layout. Saturday's second round begins at 7:30 a.m. MST.
