TUCSON - In a vote by the league coaches, the University of Arizona Wildcat women's basketball team is picked to finish seventh in the Pacific-10 Conference preseason poll, it was announced on Monday.
Arizona, finishing eighth in 2009-10, received 36 points in the voting. Stanford led the coaches' poll with 81 points. California tallied 73 points for second place and USC rounded out the top three with 61 points.
Under third-year head coach Niya Butts, the Wildcats return four starters and seven letterwinners from the 2009-10 season. Among those returning, senior Ify Ibekwe is a Pac-10 honoree for her overall play and her defensive abilities. Sophomore Davellyn Whyte is the defending Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. Additionally, Butts and her coaching staff have added two freshmen and a junior college transfer to the roster.
The 2010-11 Arizona women's basketball slate will start Nov. 2 with an exhibition game against Grand Canyon. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at McKale Center. The regular season will begin with a contest at Wichita State on Nov. 11.
