Junior Karin Wurm becomes the 13th All-American that head coach Bill Ryden has trained at UA.

SALT LAKE CITY ?C University of Arizona gymnast Karin Wurm tied for third place on the floor exercise during Session II at the NCAA Championships on Thursday night in the Jon. M. Huntsman Center, qualifying for the individual event finals to be held on Saturday night. Teammates Brittney Morgan and Jamie Holton also competed individually, but did not qualify for Saturdayˇ?s event finals.

?

Wurm becomes the first Wildcat to advance to the individual event finals since Monica Bisordi accomplished the feat by qualifying on floor in 2004. Wurm was named a first team All-American on the floor exercise and a second team All-American as an all-arounder for her performances, becoming the 13th All-American coached by Ryden at Arizona.

?

"I am so proud of Karin," head coach Bill Ryden said following the meet. "It was a typical night for her because she kept fighting. I know she was a little disappointed after beam, but she bounced back with an excellent floor routine and a great vault."

?

Wurm began her competition on the uneven parallel bars in the first rotation, following Louisiana Stateˇ?s competitors. One of the best bar workers in the nation, Wurm lived up to her billing, earning a mark of 9.850 to place in a tie for 10th. She then moved with the Tigers to the balance beam for the second rotation, and received a 9.650. After a bye, Wurm moved to floor and turned in one of the best floor performances of the evening, tallying a 9.850 to place third. In her final event, Wurm competed on vault, notching a 9.850, to finish eighth in the all-around with a total of 39.200. The eighth-place finish in Session II earns her recognition as a second team All-American in the all-around.

?

"She was so much more comfortable this year," Ryden said of Wurm, who competed as an all-arounder at the NCAA Championships last year but did not qualify for the event finals. "She has shown such tremendous confidence all year, and it really showed tonight."

?

Morgan began the meet on beam following the UCLAˇ?s beam team. Competing in her first career NCAA Championships event, Morgan posted a 9.775. After a bye before floor, Morgan then moved to the floor exercise during the third rotation, and recorded a 9.700. For her third event, Morgan moved to vault and notched a 9.750. After a bye before bars, Morgan capped her meet with a 9.750 on bars, to finish with a total of 38.975 in the all-around.

?

"Brittney went out and turned in four very solid events," Ryden said of the freshman all-arounder. "There was so much intensity in this meet and it will definitely help her perform in this atmosphere in the future. It is a great learning experience for her, just like it was for Karin a year ago."

?

Arizonaˇ?s third individual competing was senior Jamie Holton. The 5-5 native of Phoenix performed on beam during the third rotation following Denver, but had a fall, resulting in a score of 9.200.

?

"It's really disappointed for Jamie," Ryden said. "She was looking really good. It's one of those things where the slightest miscue costs you on beam."

?

The event finals will be held on Saturday night at 7 p.m. (MDT) in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
