OJAI, Calif. - The University of Arizona's men's tennis players struggled today in the first round of singles competition at the 2011 Pacific-10 Championships. Senior Geoff Embry, sophomore Frank Chen and freshmen Mario Urquidi and Andre Vidaller all fell short in straight sets at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.
"This was a good experience for these guys to play in the top flight," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "Tomorrow we will have some tough matches, but I am confident the guys will give it everything they have."
The four Wildcats competed in the Singles Championship Draw in the Round of 32 this morning. First to take the court for the Wildcats was Vidaller who faced fellow freshman Emilio Gomez of USC. Gomez topped the Santos, Brazil native in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 earning his 19th win of the season.
Embry, one of two returning Wildcats who competed in last year's Pac-10 Championships, dropped straight sets to Nick Andrews of California 6-0, 6-3.
The Wildcats third loss of the day came against the No. 5-seed of Amit Inbar from UCLA. Inbar dispatched Chen 6-0, 6-3. Chen also returned to the Pac-10 Championships after competing in the Singles Invitational Draw last season.
Urquidi faced Stanford's No. 2-seed of Bladley Klahn of Stanford. Urquidi fell short in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The four Wildcats will now shift their focus to doubles action tomorrow.
