Arizona Head Coach Sean Miller
"Overall this was a good team win. Northern Colorado has a lot of skilled, experienced players that came back this year. They are hard to defend, which you could see in the first ten minutes of the game today. They won a lot of games last year and will win a lot this year."
"Tonight we had about twenty-eight minutes of great intensity. We played team basketball on defense and offense, and that's really going to be the identity of this year's team. We're going to go by the numbers and play some unselfish basketball, led by Derrick Williams. He had a great night, with fifteen points and eight rebounds, and I know he could have done more if I decided to play him more."
"I'm also very proud of Kyle Fogg, Brendon Lavender, and Kevin Parrom, and the effort they had to hold Devon Beitzel to only two points, when he averages eighteen points per game. One year ago, one of the country's best perimeter players came to McKale and we gave him milk and cookies. We handed him the ball, he'd miss a shot and we'd give it right back to him. He broke some records here, and that was the identity of last year's defense. I give this year's defense a lot of credit to keeping Beitzel from getting a field goal. We made it hard for him, and didn't give him any open shots."
"Big guys improve at different points in their career. Arizona has a history of some great players in the NBA that, if you looked at some of them their freshman year, you almost wonder how they can be any help. Kyryl (Natyazhko) had a great summer, and he really isn't given enough credit for his defense. His size helps us close to the basket, and I like what I've seen from him so far. He's confident, and I'm confident that he'll keep it up. He goes up against Derrick (Williams) in practice, and he's tough to match-up against. He's a good screener, and he's comfortable shooting. He can run; he doesn't just plant his feet. Kyryl isn't such a great jumper yet, but he adds a lot of dimension to the team because of his size."
"We'll face more and more challenges as the season goes on, and I don't expect us to hold every team's leading scorer to no field goals, but I'm anxious to see how we handle them."
Arizona Player Quotes
On his career high day:
"The whole team did their job especially in the first half. Everyone was feeling it today. I worked on my jump shot this summer. Coach told me if I'm open to take it. I just feel more confident and comfortable out there."
On going against Derrick Williams in practice:
"In my case, playing against the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and going against one of the best players in the conference has helped me. This year coming back from Europe I'm much more confident."
On his adjustments to the college game:
"Coming in as a freshman and just practicing and competing against these guys has helped me. It just starts in practice. Coach works with me in practice everyday with the system. I'm learning everyday. I'm just playing a team game, whatever I can do is for the team."
On the substitutions:
"The starting five and the five off the bench are capable of scoring offensively. The bench gives us fresh bodies."
On Kyryl Natyazhko:
"He has a lot of confidence. He is a lot different than he was last year and he's not afraid to take those shots. Everyday we go against each other."
On the schedule:
"I'm not looking past anybody. Everyone wants to play Kansas, butwe have a good game coming up. We are playing really well right now. This team is trying real hard to be a top 25 team and set the tone."
On playing 23 minutes:
"I wasn't that tired today. I don't have to play 40 minutes like last year, with Tree (Alex Jacobson) and Kyryl coming in, I don't have to play that long."
