SARASOTA, Fla. - Competing in the team's last fall tournament of the season, University of Arizona men's tennis senior Andres Carrasco downed his first two opponents and powered his way to the Quarterfinals at the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla. Junior Jason Zafiros fell in the Round of 16 in singles action.
At the only event in the country where players have the chance to compete on clay courts, Carrasco and Zafiros are facing some of the top players in the nation.
"Andres played well today and is proving that he can compete with the best in the country," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "Jason is a little under the weather but he fought as hard as he could."
Carrasco faced Kurt Mauro of Temple in the first round of competition where he swept in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the second round. The senior then faced Miami's Carl Sunberg in a close match where Carrasco edged out Sunberg in a close 7-5 first set victory and then notched a 6-2 second set win. Tomorrow Carrasco will play at 11 a.m. in the Quarterfinals.
Zafiros, playing close to his home in Bradenton, Fla. took to the courts in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. The junior fought hard, but was defeated in straight sets to Eduardo Pavia of Miami 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16.
