NCAA Region 1 Softball - Tucson

Game 5 - Arizona 2, Centenary 1

Centenary (36-27) pitcher Cheyenne Daries kept top-ranked Arizona's hitters at bay for five-and-a-third innings before Jackie Coburn ended a collection of popups and flyouts by driving a ball over the centerfield fence to kick-start the Cats and start them on the way to a 2-1 victory in first-round action at NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships Thursday afternoon.

Wendy Allen came through an inning later to give UA the victory and drive in her 71st run of the season. Crystal Farley led off with a slap single to short, Caitlin Lowe sacrificed her to second. Autumn Champion slapped another single to short, but Farley held at second. Allen singled through the left side to score Farley for the winning run.

Daries nearly led the Ladies to a stunning defeat of the top-seeded program in the NCAA playoffs. She held the Cats to nine hits, and struck out three, dropping to 25-15. Alicia Hollowell won in relief to give her 40 victories for the second consecutive season (39-2). She threw three-and-one-third innings, striking out five.

Arizona (54-4) made outs by popping up or flying out 13 times.

Arizona had back-to-back singles by Samantha Quintero and Crystal Farley to lead off the third, but Caitlin Lowe, Autumn Champion and Wendy Allen were retired in order.

Centenary gots its first hit off UA starter Wendy Allen when Jordan Lansdale led off the fourth with a single. Lauren Koehn sacrificed her to second. Janis Kelley put run at the corners by reaching on an error by shortstop Kristie Fox.

Megan Hall followed with a run-scoring single and Centenary had a 1-0 lead. Hall stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Allen worked to a 2-1 count on Ursula Maroski, and Arizona coach Larry Ray brought in Alicia Hollowell to pitch. Hollowell struck out Maroski and Micah Rhodes to stop the rally.

UA appeared to catch a break when CC catcher Kowaleski dropped a pop foul by Samantha Quintero, and Quintero followed with a base hit. Daries got Farley to pop to first and Lowe to fly out to centerfield. Champion hit a slap single but Wendy Allen flew out to left for the third out.

Coburn's blast, her 13th of the year, came with one out in the sixth. Kristie Fox followed with a double to left, but Daries pitched out of the jam again.

Arizona will play Louisiana-Lafayette in the winner's bracket at 2 p.m. Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium. Centenary meets South Carolina at 9 a.m. Friday in an elimination game.

The final moments of the game had one drawback for the Cats, when Champion, jumping in the air following Farley's slide across the plate for the winning score, camd down hard and apparently injured her ankle. She had to be helped off the field.
