LOS ANGELES -
On the first night of the Men’s Swimming Pac-12 Championships, No. 1 Arizona earned a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay and finished fifth in the 800 freestyle relay.
The 200 medley relay marked the first race of the meet, represented by seniors Kelley Wyman (Ft. Pierce, Fla.) and Adam Small (Tempe, Ariz.) and sophomores Mitchell Friedemann (Allenton, Wis.) and Giles Smith (Baltimore, Md.). The quartet posted a time of 1:25.60, shy of their previous record of 1:24.34 recorded at the Texas Invite earlier in the season. California finished first, while Stanford finished in second.
In the 800 free relay, Arizona’s team of seniors Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.) and Cameron Owen (Fishers, Ind.) and sophomores Woody Joye (Coosada, Ala.) and Matt Barber (Kingwood, Texas) finished in fifth, while posting an NCAA “B” cut.
“Tonight was a good night for us,” Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. “It went just as we expected it would and we are right where we want to be in terms of getting ready for NCAAs.”
The Wildcats will be back in action on Thursday, March 1 for the first full day of competition. Events will include the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and the 200 free relay. Prelims will begin at 11 a.m. PT and finals at 6 p.m. PT.
