WALNUT, Calif. - Junior forward Ify Ibekwe was selected to the 2009 Pac-10 Women's Basketball Preaseason All-Conference Team while her team was selected 9th by conference media members in a poll released on Wednesday afternoon.
Ibekwe, who earned Associated Press All-America honorable mention honors last season, was a 1st-team all-Pac-10 selection as well as all-Defensive Team honoree last season.
Arizona, which finished tied for 8th place with Washington State in 2008-09, received 57 points in the voting. The Wildcats finished were picked ahead of Washington, who was picked 10th with 32 points.
Nine-time defending conference champion Stanford was a unanimous pick with 210 points. Arizona State edged out California for second place, 175 to 170, while southern California rivals UCLA and USC were picked 4th and 5th, respectively.
Oregon State slipped into the 6th position with 84 points while Washington State took 7th (81 points) and Oregon was tabbed for 8th place (64 points).
Defending Pac-10 Player of the Year Jayne Appel of Stanford and all-Pac-10 selection Alexis Gray-Lawson of California were both unanimous selections to the preseason all-conference squad. Joining Ibekwe and the Bay Area duo were junior guard Doreena Campbell of UCLA and senior guard Jeanette Pohlen of Stanford.
The 2009-10 season tips off for Arizona on Saturday, November 14 when the Wildcats take on Iona in the first round of the Iona College Tip-Off Tournament in New Rochelle, N.Y. at 7:30 p.m. (EDT)
