TUCSON, Ariz. – After capping off a 10-match homestand last Sunday against Cal, the Arizona volleyball team hits the road for the first time in Pac-12 play this season with a trip to Los Angeles to take on a pair of top-10 opponents in USC and UCLA.
The Wildcats (9-6, 1-3 Pac-12) will face No. 5 USC (14-2, 2-2 Pac-12) to open the trip on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing out the weekend at No. 6 UCLA (10-3, 2-2 Pac-12) on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Sunday’s match will air live on the Pac-12 Networks.
Arizona closed out its homestand last weekend with a pair of defeats at the hands of No. 7 Stanford and California. The Wildcats were able to take a set off both opponents, but eventually fell to both in four-sets.
Sophomore Madi Kingdon (Phoenix, Ariz.) ranks in the top-five of the Pac-12 in both kills and points. Kingdon ranks third in kills (4.43 p/s) and fifth in points (4.77 p/s). She leads the Wildcats with six double-doubles and has recorded double-figure kills in 14 of the team’s 15 matches. Junior libero Candace Nicholson (Long Beach, Calif.) ranks third in the Pac-12 in digs at 4.30 per set.
USC leads the all-time series against Arizona, 54-17. The Trojans have won the last five meetings and eight of the last 10 in the series. The Wildcats last defeated USC on September 25, 2009 in Tucson.
Meanwhile, UCLA, the defending national champions, leads the all-time series against Arizona, 52-20-1. However, the Wildcats knocked off the Bruins in both meetings last season.
Following this weekend’s matches, Arizona will continue its road swing with trips to Utah and Colorado beginning on Oct. 12.
