No. 43 Arizona Men's Tennis Falls to No. 39 Rice
Tucson, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's tennis team lost to the Rice Owls, 2-5, on Sunday. In their sixth match of a 10-match homestand, Arizona won two matches in singles play, and one in the doubles competition. The Cats are now 6-1 on the season.
On the singles side, playing in the first position, senior Steven Capriati dropped his match to William Barker in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. In a hard-fought match, sophomore Whi Kim was victorious against Matthias Mathaes, 7-6 (13), 7-6 (4), making Kim undefeated in singles play this season. Junior Tom Lloyd, playing in the third slot, handled Prakash Venkataraman, 6-4, 6-0, Lloyd is also undefeated in singles action this season. Sophomore Carl Hagman allowed Cody Jackson to clinch the win for Rice, 6-4, 7-6, in the fourth spot. Senior Bruno Arapovic, in one of the longest matches of the day, lost to Fabien Giraud, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. And in the sixth slot, sophomore Roeland Brateanu fell to Takehiko Morita, 6-2, 6-4.
Arizona lost two of three doubles matches Sunday, allowing Rice to win the doubles point. The team of Capriati and Hagman, Arizona's only doubles win, took care of Venkataraman and Mathaes, 8-6. In the second spot, Kim and Lloyd lost to Barker and Giraud, 8-4. Clinching the doubles point for the Owls, Vuk Rajevac and Morita defeated senior Brian Jackson and freshman Colin O'Grady, 8-5.
The Wildcats are back in action on Friday, Feb. 22, at 1:30 p.m., when they face the Southern California Trojans at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
